Toothless quadsuit idea by nooby-banana Toothless quadsuit idea by nooby-banana
And now for something completely different.

I've always been fascinated by good quadsuits but never really had the nerve to try one for myself. But this past weekend I was at Megacon and one of my friends had an AWESOME Astrid/Deadly Nadder cosplay.

unfinished photo here =====> [link]

It inspired me to try at least designing a quadsuit. :)

This costume might never happen, but it was fun to design. I took a few pointers from :iconmonoyasha:'s amazing Toothless quad, such as connecting the head to a PVC pipe over the head and vision through "scales" on the neck, but the rest I came up with on my own. I THINK it's a physically possible design? I dunno, looks good to me but I've never done something like this before.

The only part that's giving me trouble is the backpack that the wings and neck come out of. I'm not sure how I would go about attaching the wing/neck pipes to it.

If any of you guys have any new ideas, let's hear them! I'd honestly love to make this one day and I want the design to be sound before construction begins.

What was your idea for how to make the back feet? I've been working on a variation of this design, but the only thing I'm having a hard time with are the back feet. Everything else is more or less covered.

I searched a few websites ( Best one here---> www.therpf.com/showthread.php?… ) on how to make a toothless qudsuit similar to Jessica's and I found just the perfect solution for the wing attachment problem. IndieFilmGeek had made a toothless quad suit for his 10 year-old daughter and had started off with an old aluminium backpack frame which is actually a smart idea in my opinion. The wings were attached to the aluminium frame which would go around the waist. Pretty clever. Even a quad suit can be done from household materials, except the frame might not be as long as required so extra pipes could be added. Just trying to help :D

and u would have to add weight to the tail other wise the costume would be to heavy in the front, but i like the foam ribs idea!

do not use styrofoam for any part of the costume it is not carvable and breaks easily.

i am making a toothless quadsuit and i'm useing this plan but adding tweaks here and there but ive found it is easier to walk when u shrink the wings and have them rest on the sides of the costume.

Will be trying to make a toothless cosplay this summer.
Though I've never done cosplay, I'm pretty handy and will have to plan everything.
This sketch gives me a nice idea on how to start, thanks. C:

I've done a bipedal dragon in the past, & for that I modified a camel back to hold the wings. I added some padding into the main pocket, then sewed channels into the camel back into which the ends of the wings slid into. Any remaining opening was then stuffed with batting for added cushioning. The existing straps for the camel back (going across the chest & abdomen) held it securely & comfortably, which is very important given where the weight of the wings (& in this case, head) will settle while you're wearing it.

howdy, i am making a toothless quad. my design is very similar to yours.
with my experience from quads, i would say, dont use styrofoam for the head, use a soft light weight foam. (from like a foam and rubber shop) styrofoam is very very heavy in bulk, i did this for my first quad and it was very painful.
i also dont understand how you will chop the heel off your shoe. your foot needs to go somewhere and to have it up like that in the position a quad is in will also be uncomfortable. apart from that, this design looks great! :)
hope to see you make it.

Quadsuits generally aren't meant to be worn for more than a few hours at a time. But if they're built correctly (keeping stress off your neck and back) then they can be quite comfortable.

you might want to look into digitigrade stilts for both your legs and your arms.
what kind of "mechanicals" are you thinking of?

:iconnooby-banana:

I don't think I'll need digitigrade stilts for my legs since Toothless is plantigrade like a human.
But I guess I could've used a better term than "mechanics". I just used that as a blanket term for the front leg stilts and backpack that will hold the neck and wings to the body. I'd like to be able to make the head turn left and right with my own head somehow, but I haven't figured that out yet.

since reading this, I've been looking for clear official images that'd confirm or dispute toothless' plantigrade stance. can't find anything clear enough.

neck (and tail) articulation... broad stiff discs forming flat hinges, using tension cable or bungee for suspension support... hrmn...

Quadsuits normally weird me the hell out, but if you're going in a similar vein to the one you're inspired by, it could be pretty cool! I guess just make sure you have enough padding for your arms and feet? That's a lot of weight to lug around, even for a little bit. xP

I think it's the eyes that freak me out on most quadsuits. But I find that if the eyes are right then it generally avoids the Uncanny Valley. There's a Arcanine quadsuit that's really awesome like that. It even blinks!

I know it's gonna end up being kinda heavy, but I'm really hoping to minimize padding as much as possible and use lightweight fabric, especially for the fins/wings.

I think it's mostly the proportions to me. I mean, there's only so much you can do with human anatomy, but eh. Creepy. xP Still, a blinking Arcanine sounds pretty neat!

Sounds like a good plan. I'd love to see you do this! C:

LOL, if you'd read then you'd find that I'm putting vision through "scales" in the side and bottom of the neck. So yes, the vision isn't perfect and I'll probably need a guide but I CAN see shit.

-_- That's generally how quadsuits work. The wearer sees through the bottom/sides neck. Why are you being so rude?

No, but rudeness is generally not smiled upon so I don't know why you'd bother. It IS possible to give constructive criticism without being rude you know. People might take you a bit more seriously.

Honestly I would make the wings a totally separate structure from the rest of it. Just a back pack. I would worry that if you did other wise, it might put too much stress on the neck and break it and harm the person waring it. Not to mention it would ruin a lot of hard work. Or maybe you could somehow get the wings to clip on to the structure kind of in the same manner as the head?

I was thinking of somehow making the wings attachable to the main backpack frame, both for easier transportation and better support. But don't worry, there will be minimal stress on my neck. Everything will be based off of the backpack so if anything it'll be my back that's a little stressed, not my neck. My back can take a lot more. :)
